Kundalio Shravak

Kundaliyo Shravak was a merchant by profession selling ghee (purified butter) but he was a deep scholar of religious philosophy. Once he had gone to the town for selling ghee; meanwhile he saw that Acharyasuri Ratnakarsuriji, seated in a palanquin, was going towards the royal palace. Alongwith the palanquin, numerous scholars were walking on foot and many armed soldiers were walking ahead and they were followed by the royal servants.

Kundaliyo Shravak got engrossed in thought at this sight. He was well aware that Acharya Ratnakarsuriji was a versatile scholar of religious philosophy, logic, grammar, literature, prosody and many other branches of knowledge. No scholar would introduce himself as scholar before him because they knew full well that as compared to the versatile scholarship of Acharyashri their scholarship was quite negligible. Shri Ratnakarsuriji had the unusual ability of providing many consistent interpretations of a  single pad (a form of poem), since he possessed profound intellect and mastery of many sciences. Because of this ability, the king himself had honoured him with the title of ‘Anekarthvadi’ (one capable of interpreting given sentence in several ways). As a token of their respect and honour for him, the king as well as the people had requested him to come to the royal court in a palanquin rather than by walking. Ultimately this led to a slow but regular laxity in his characteristic qualities. One error leads to a thousand. In course of time Acharyashuri began to relish the tastiest and sweetest food meant for the king and the chieftains and he also began to use their costliest clothes and in course of time he was accustomed to accepting pearls and rubies by way of gifts.

Kundaliyo Shravak was surprised to see that the Acharya having so great an impact on Jain religion should sit and move in a palanquin and accept valuable gifts and put on costly dress. He wondered if this was fair for a monk committed to a vow of non possession But Kundaliyo Shravak bowed to him and paid his respects. The other day he went to attend the lecture of Ratnakarsuriji and at the conclusion of the lecture, he quoted a gatha (verse) from Updeshmala and requested the Acharyashri to tell its meaning. It meant that money is regarded as the root cause of all evils and it has been renounced by all past sages. If some Acharya keeps with him such evil causing money and riches, it is needless and useless for him to undergo renunciation and penance.

Anekarthvadi Acharyashri, with scholarly wisdom, provided various meanings other than the standard one. Kundaliyo Shravak said politely, /I Acharyashri ! You have provided wonderful meanings of the’ gatha’ but I request you kindly to oblige me by providing its original and essential meaning.” So saying Kundaliyo bowed down and went out to sell his ghee. He returned the other day. Acharyashri offered almost a new definition and when Kundaliyo went to him the third day he offered a totally new meaning which was never heard before. Thus six months passed in interpreting the gatha.

Kundaliyo came after six months and said, “ Acharyashri ! All the money that I had earned by the sale of ghee is exhausted to-day. I shall have to return to my village for some urgent work. I repent only one thing that I have not been able to grasp the original meaning of the gatha.” Next day, Acharyashri explained to him the original and correct meaning of the gatha, and Kundaliyo Shravak went home very delighted. It was a moment of awakening for the Acharya and he recited a prayer at Shatrunjaya Tirtha which came to be known as Ratnakar Pachhisi.

 
 

Meri Bhavana (My Aspirations) with Explanation

Jisne raag dwesh kaam-aadik jeete sab jag jaan liya,
Sab jeevo ko moksh marg ka nis-prah ho up-desh diya.
Buddh, Veer, Jin, Hari, Har, Brahma ya usko Swa-dheen kaho,
Bhakti-bhav se prerit ho yah chitt usi mey leen raho. ||1||

Explanation: He, Who has subdued his passions and desires, who has realiese the secret of the Universe in entirely: 
Who has discoursed upon the teaching of Right Path of Liberation for the benefit of all in a quite unselfish manner:
Who is variously termed Budhha, Mahavira, Jina, Hari, Hara, Brahma and Self:
In Him, imbued with deep devotion, may this mind (of mine) eternally dwell !

Vish-yo ki asha nahi jin-ke saamya bhav dhan rakh-te hey,
Nij par ke hit-sadhan mey jo nish-din tat-par rah-te hey.
Swarth tyag ki kathin tapas-ya bina khed jo karte hey,
Aise gyani sadhu jagat ke dukh samuh ko har-tey hey. ||2||

Explanation: Those who have no longings left for sense produced pleasures;
Who are rich in the quality of equanimity:
Who are day and night engaged in encompassing the good of all – their own as well as of others:
Who undergo the severe penance of self-effacement without finching -such Enlightened Saints, verily, conquer the pain and misery of mundane existence!

Rahe sada sat-sang unhi ka dhyan unhi ka nitya rahey,
Un hee jaisee char-ya mey yah chitt sada anu-ratt rahey.
Nahi sata-u kisee jeev ko jhoot kabhi nahi kaha karu,
Par-dhan vanita par na lubha-u san-to-sham-rit piya karu. ||3||

Explanation: May I always associate with such aforesaid Holymen:
May my mind be constantly occupied with their contemplation: 
May the longing of my heart be always to tread in their footsteps: 
May I also never cause pain to any living being: 
May I never utter untruth; and
May I never covet the wealth or wife of another!
May I ever drink the nectar of contentment! 

Ahamkaar ka bhav na rakh-u nahi kisi par krodh karu,
Dekh doos-ro ki badh-ti ko kabhi na ir-shya bhav dharu.
Rahe bhavna aisee meri saral satya vya-vahar karu,
Baney jaha tak is jeevan mey auro upkaar karu. ||4||

Explanation: With pride may I never be elated, angry may I feel with none:
The sight of another’s luck may not make me envious with his lot:
May my desire be ever for dealing fair and straight, and may my heart only delight in doing good to others to the best of my abilities all the days of my life!

Maitree-bhav jagat mey mera sab jeevo se nitya rahey,
Deen dukhi jeevo par mere ur se karu-na Srot bahey.
Dur-jan kroor ku-marg-rato par kshobh nahi mujh-ko avey,
Samya bhav rakhu mey un par aisee pari-nati ho javey. ||5||

Explanation: May I always entertain a feeling of friendliness for all living beings in the world:
May the spring of sympathy in my heart be ever bubbling for those in agony and affliction;
May I never feel angry with the vile, the vicious and the wrongly-directed.
May there be such all adjustment of things that I may always remain tranquil in dealing with them!

Guni jano ko dekh hri-day mey mere prem umar avey,
Baney jaha tak unki seva kar-key yeh mann sukh pavey.
Ho-u nahi kri-ta-ghna kabhi mey droh na mere ur avey,
Gun-grahan ka bhav rahey nit, drish-ti na do-sho par javey. ||6||

Explanation: May my heart ever overflow with love at the sight of virtuous men:
May this mind (of mine) reejoice always in serving them to the utmost of its power: 
May I be never ungrateful: 
May jealousy never approach me: 
May my longing be always for assimilating the virtues of others: and
May the eyes never alight on their faults!

Koi bura kaho ya achchha lakshmi avey ya javey,
Lakho varsho tak jee-u ya mri-tyu aaj hi aa javey.
Athva koi kaisa hi bhay ya la-lach dene avey,
To bhi nyay marg se mera kabhi na pag dig-ney pavey. ||7||

Explanation:  Whether people speak of me well or ill;
Whether wealth comes to me or departs:
Whether I live to be hundreds of thousands years old: 
or give up the ghost this day: 
Whether any one holds out any kind of fear: 
or with worldly riches he tempts me: 
In the face of all these possible things may my footsteps swerve not from the path of Truth!

Hokar sukh mey magn na fuley dukh mey kabhi na gha-ba-ravey,
Parvat nadi sham-shan bhay-anak atvee se nahi bhay kha-vey.
Rahey adol akamp niniran-tar yah man dradh-tar ban javey,
Isht viyog a-nisht yog mey sahan-sheel-ta dikhla-vey. ||8||

Explanation:  With pleasure may the mind be not puffed up: 
Let pain disturb it never: 
May the awesome loneliness of a mountain forest or river, 
or a burning place, never cause it a shiver.
unmoved, unshakable, firmness may it grow adamantine,
And display true moral strength when parted from the desired thing, or united with what is undesired!

Sukhi rahey sab jeev jagat kay koi kabhi na gha-ba-ravey,
Bair paap abhi-man chhod jag nitya naye mangal gavey.
Ghar-ghar charcha rahey dharm ki dushkrit dushkar ho javey,
Gyan-charit unnat kar apna manuj janm fal sab pavey. ||9||

Explanation: May happiness be the lot of all: 
May distress come near none; 
Giving up hatred, sin and pride: 
May the world pour forth one continuous eternal beam of delight: 
May Dharma become the main topic of conversation in every household: 
May evil cease to be easily-wrought: 
May increase of wisdom and merit of works,
May men realize the purpose of human life- Moksha!

Ee-ti bhee-ti vya-pey nahi jag mey vrish-ti samay par hua karey,
Dharm-nishth hokar raja bhi nyaay praja ka kiya karey.
Rog, mari, dur-bhik-sha na fey-le praja shanti se jiya karey,
Param ahinsa dharm jagat mey fail sarv-hit kiya karey. ||10||

Explanation: May distress and suffering no longer exist; 
May it rain in time: 
May the king also be righteously inclined:
And impartially administer justice to the subjects: 
May disease, epidemics and famines cease;
May people live in peace:
May the exalted Ahimsa Dharma prevail:
And the Gospel of mercy (not injuring any one is the highest religion) become the source of good to all!!

Failey prem paras-par jag mey moh dur hee raha karey,
A-priya katuk-kathor shabd nahi koi mukh se kaha karey.
Ban kar sab ‘yug-veer’ hri-day se desho-nati rat raha karey,
Vastu-swaroop vichar khushi se sab dukh san-kat saha karey. ||11||

Explanation: May there be mutual love in the world: 
May delusion dwell at a distance:
May no one ever utter unpleasant speech:
Or words that are harsh, with his tongue; 
May men, heroes of the time:
Whole- heartedly work in their country’s cause: 
May all understand the Laws of Truth: 
And joyfully sorrow and suffering endure
Om, Peace, Shanti! Shanti! Shanti!
